Treating Acne In Aged
Skin
The
popular belief is that acne is a problem faced only by the
teens. On the contrary, research has shown that acne is equally
prevalent in people over 25 years of age. As skin gets older it
demands a lot more care and attention. So apart from treating
acne, older people have to deal with the normal aging process
of the skin too. As the skin becomes more sensitive in old age,
people have to be more careful before using any product on
their skin.
Not many
pharmaceutical companies cater to the needs of older people in
terms of acne treatment. Therefore, it becomes a greater area
of concern for them. Acne in older people are generally caused
by hormonal changes.
In older
people treatments used should depend on the skin quality. If
the skin is very sensitive then mild products should be used.
Salicylic Acid is considered better than other
drugs.
A proper
skin care routine should be formulated to get rid of acnes.
Face should be regularly cleansed twice a day with mild soap.
The skin should never be exfoliated as that can cause rashes
and develop more cysts on the skin. Another major factor that
contributes to acne is dandruff and oil in the hair. Hair
should be kept oil free and dandruff free to avoid any blockage
of pores that leads to acne.
Of the
various treatments available in the market Photodynamic
Treatment (PDT) is one of the latest methods available. In
this, a special chemical is applied to the skin that is
activated by a particular wavelength of light. It not only
helps in removal of acne from the skin but also helps in
improvement of the over all health of the skin and in improving
the wrinkled skin.
In old
age people generally develop sporadic acne. For treating them,
ointments should be applied specifically on the affected area
and not on the entire face. This may cause the acne to spread
over other areas also. Antibiotics are also used for treating
acne. Isotretinon can also be recommended in certain cases but
this powerful drug should not be taken without proper medical
advice
Evening
primrose oil and black currant seed oil are the best home
remedies for treating acne in older people. They are taken in
capsule form for a few months before any result can be
expected.
